Magical Flora and Fauna

From Falling Sky

The world of Falling Sky has a variety of interesting creatures and plants that are not found in less magical climates.

Fauna

Some of these creatures may appear at Falling Sky events represented by puppets or similar representations.

Aerial Sealife

During the Cataclysm, nearly all of the sea-life perished or was lost, falling into the Abyss. However, some few fishes and aquatic creatures were transformed by the energies of the Great Storm into aerial sealife - magical creatures that swim through the sky as easily as their ancestors once did through the seas.

Sky-whales are hunted by the Flotilla - each one can provide a vast amount of food, fuel, and materials. However, taking one down is no easy task, and bringing it back an even harder one. Many people from Flotilla might have whale-bone decorations, although some object on principle to hunting these majestic creatures and refuse to partake in the spoils of killing one.

Storm-sharks are hunters, often found flocking around lightning storms to feast on anyone who falls overboard from lightning-catching ships or to feast on schools of smaller fish stunned by the thunderbolts. Interestingly enough, they have proven to be more domesticable than their aquatic brethren; once befriended, they are quite loyal, if also easily bribed with food.

Turtles are also occasionally seen, and seem to have some magical significance; there have been multiple reports of turtles with runed shells that could launch magic to fend people off.

There are also tales of the Leviathan, a vast Kraken that lairs somewhere in the upper sky, on the edges of the Great Storm.

Ship's Cats

Being animals that were often kept aboard skyships, cats were one of the few domestic animals that had a breeding population survive the Cataclysm. They are still well-appreciated for their part in keeping the rat populations of the ships down.

Fauna

Many plants are relevant to the Seeker's Guild.

Nettles

Nettles are unfortunately common for some reason in the areas of land that fall from the Great Storm. For this reason, many Seekers opt for clothing that covers their arms and legs when adventuring.

Magical Fruits and Herbs

A large number of magical fruits and herbs are found to have been mutated by the Great Storm. Eating these is known to sometimes have random alchemical effects, although their properties rarely survive transport.

Etheric Lilac

This extremely rare flower is a pale purple, with silver berries. Its uses in magic and alchemy are myriad, but it has unfortunately proved impossible to cultivate; what is found in the wild is the only supply that there is. It can function as a unique Tinkering reagent, as a powerful mana crystal for Runecasting, or be used to make strange and unique Alchemy.
